At L’Oréal, we have been taking actions for many years to reduce our environmental impact and make a positive contribution to society. Within the L’Oréal for the Future program framework we are actively committed to combating climate change, with a global objective to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions across our entire value chain over the long term. Decarbonizing our business travel is an integral part of this goal. This memo is designed to support you in planning and carrying out more responsible travel, enabling you to travel better, while caring for the planet and your well-being.

It only takes a few minutes. Answer 9 short questions and learn how to make more responsible travel choices.

2 tons

A single round-trip flight from New York to London nearly exceeds the 2-ton annual CO₂ budget per person recommended to keep global warming under 1.5°C. That’s the entire year’s allowance in just one trip !

2|When avoiding flights, which mode of transport cuts CO₂ emissions the most compared to a short-haul flight ?
Taking a high-speed train

Trains are the most sustainable travel option. For trips under 3.5 hours, we strongly recommend taking the train—it’s cleaner, more comfortable, and often quicker door-to-door.

3|How much less CO₂ does a train emit compared to the same journey by plane?
100 times less

High-speed trains, especially in countries with clean electricity, emit up to 100 times less CO₂ per passenger-km than planes. They also eliminate airport emissions from operations, taxiing, and detours.

A

Upgrading to a premium cabin, like business class, increases your individual carbon footprint due to the lower passenger density in those sections.

5|What would be another effective way for companies to cut business travel emissions?
Send fewer people to events

Before booking a trip, ask yourself: Does everyone need to attend? Sending fewer people eliminates emissions entirely while saving time and resources.

6|By 2030, how much does L’Oréal aim to cut employee air travel emissions compared to 2019?
50% reduction

L’Oréal is targeting a 50% cut in air travel emissions by 2030—requiring an additional 2% annual reduction to stay on track.

7|Since 2019, how much has L’Oréal already reduced air travel CO₂ emissions?
44%

That’s a significant drop, but we still have some work to do to reach our 2030 goals.

B

A flight with a layover is more polluting because each takeoff uses a lot of energy, increasing CO2 emissions.

9|If you must fly, how much less CO₂ does economy class generate compared to first class?
3x less

Economy class generates 66% less (three times less) than first class. Plus, direct flights further reduce emissions from takeoff and landing.
